The silence is ours

Social distancing

Lockdown and its limitations of physical presence in the public space led to what we now call “social distancing”, a euphemism and a contradiction in terms which we have ended up accepting as a new concept along with “new normal” or “easing lockdown”.  Daniel G.  Andújar, true to his incisive gaze on the  not always transparent movements of the system, reflects on highly varied aspects that have arisen during or been amplified by the pandemic: ranging from social  isolation  to  public  safety  or  gender  violence,  as well as dehumanization caused by technology in certain  areas,  especially  control  of  the  population  and personal freedoms. Daniel G. Andújar recovers his forensic technique previously used in his series Infiltrados, (2024) presented at the Reina Sofia Museum in 2015 and Torture, (2017) exhibited at the last documenta14 in Kassel, to produce 3D image animations. In reaction to heroic, patriotic or flattering images of misinformation this series El silencio es nuestro. Distancia social (The silence is ours. Social distancing) immerses in the opaquest parts of the confinement and isolation caused by the Covid-19 crisis. Andújar looks for empathy by converting images into a visual document with great verisimilitude and impact. Parting from real events these images search for the essence in themselves, their universal representation, the desperation, that which cannot escape from the comfort of the glass bell jars covering our social media, the destruction of everyday life, the spread of erroneous information, political manipulation, the true victims of the tragedy, the anonymous people, the loss of liberties and, of course, the people who do not have the means and resources to face this situation.
